Pieter Bruegel the Elder - Hunters in the Snow

Hunters in the Snow by Pieter Bruegel the Elder dates back to 1565. It shows a snow filled landscape with people skating, a frozen mill, mountains in the background, houses, and hunters with their dogs. The picture is heavily detailed and very shows realism. If you look closely at the sky, chiaroscuro can be seen to further make this painting as vivid as possible. Furthermore, a great amount of perspective can be seen in Bruegel's painting demonstrated by his hills and mountains in the background and his change in elevation from the hunters to the skaters. This painting has an emphasis on individualism, since it is of hunters and a town instead of religion. If you closely look at any of the parts of the painting, even the snow, sfumato is present.

Humanism had an impact on Bruegel's painting. The most important is expressed by the hunters. They are a representation of a humanist. They are hunters, seekers, exactly like the humanists who hunt and seek knowledge. The people around them are the rest of the people, mindlessly doing their jobs, not even wondering what else they can achieve. Also, this painting is not about anything holy, which shows that humanism has caused artists to paint and sculpt ideas in the world besides religion.
